Simon: About 10 days after I joined the ESA Ops Management team in ESTEC to help set up Columbus and ATV operations, the Columbia accident happened.

For a few weeks it seemed that there would actually be no space station project but when it became clear that things would continue we realised that there was going to be considerable delays to both projects: at that time both were due to start by the end of 2004. In the end Columbus Operations started in Feb 2008 and ATV#1 in March 2008. At some points over those 4 additional years it seemed like the development program for these two projects would never end!
